Travis McCoy Writes From South Africa

Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes writes to his fans about his experience while he's in Africa and they people dealing with AIDS/HIV. Travis also reveals something about his life when he was younger.

I had never been to Africa before, but standing at the top of a sand dune overlooking the slums of Khayelitsha yesterday, a section of South Africa’s sprawling Cape Flats, I felt completely connected to the homeland. The sun was setting, reflecting light off the millions of corrugated tin roofs below, the last hint of day before the Flats went dark and their two million inhabitants to bed. Overwhelmed and overtired my thoughts went on to paper.

Today I met my brother, two worlds apart.
One fire one heart.
Shantytowns, pastels and browns.
Smiling children, abandoned buildings.
We are not lost.

For me, a kid from upstate New York who lives his life online and often wears his heart on his sleeve, today everything was pulled close to my chest. I dedicated what I wrote to my new brother Bulelani Mvotho a South African filmmaker who is a grantee of MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, which funds 55 HIV/AIDS projects around the globe. I am their new Ambassador, trying to revive a dialog about HIV/AIDS amongst kids my age, 15 to 24-year olds who now account for 45 percent of HIV infections worldwide.

Bulelani’s Snapshot Mobile Community Cinema is helping to spread awareness and preach responsibility in the areas most vulnerable to the disease. Almost a third of the Cape Flat’s two million residents are HIV positive, one of the largest concentrated populations in the world.

Katy Perry & Travis McCoy Split

Katy Perry and Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes have split and while Katy was hosting a New Years Bash, Travis took to his FRIENDSorENEMIES blog to let the world know how he feels about Katy and their relationship.

Travis Writes: 

"We fight every night, now that's not kosher. I reminisce with bliss of when we was closer. And wake up to be greeted by an argument again, You act like you're ten…My friends always tell me how I'm lucky to possess the best looking girl in the whole U.S.," the blog continued, "...it seems like just two years back when we were bonded and not pierced, but now I keep itchin' to jet."

Travis' Birthday On Warped Tour

Travis McCoy's birthday was on August 6 and girlfriend Katy Perry presented him with cake. According to the blogger of OhNoYouDidnt, Travis was wasted and threw cake at the crowd. Great way to celebrate your birthday on the Warped Tour.

What Travis Has To Say...

Our previous post we told you Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes was arrested for hitting a person in the audience who called him a racial slur. Perez Hilton reported Travis' publicist released this...

“Somebody in the crowd was taunting Travis with racial slurs. Travis invited him
onstage with the intent of calling him out in front of the crowd, with
absolutely no intention of a physical altercation. When he tried to help him
onstage, the guy hit Travis in the knee area (which has been in a brace because
of a recent sprain), forcing Travis to defend himself. At this point, a scuffle
broke out.
This whole incident is unfortunate. Travis McCoy and Gym Class
Heroes are anything but violent. Their message is about racial unity and having
a good time. It’s amazing that in 2008 there are still people out there that
would say such ignorant things.
Travis is deeply upset that this happened,
and has expressed his apologies to the band's fans that were at the show, Kevin
Lyman, and the Vans Warped Tour. GCH is putting this behind them and looks
forward to seeing everyone on the rest of the tour.”

Gym Class Heroes Member Arrested

Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes was arrested Tuesday night in St. Louis on one charge of third degree assault. The group just finished their first song during a set on the Warped Tour when a black concert goer called the lead singer a "f---ing ignorant n----er." Security went to remove the person from the audience when Travis his him on the head with his microphone repeatedly. Travis then apologized for his violent behavior, "I'm sorry. But when someone calls you something that ignorant and that offensive, you have to bash their head in with a microphone"

Travis was released early Wednesday morning on $500 bond.
