Ryan Tedder Blogs About Breaking Into Music Biz

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder is no stranger to the difficult process of making it in the music business. The singer/songwriter/musician/producer recently blogged about his personal journey in the industry and shared many of the obstacles he’s faced along with the tricks he’s pulled along the way.

"I would call the complaint hotline phone #’s on the websites of record labels," Tedder explains. "When the ‘complaint department’ would answer I would say ‘I’m sorry, I must have been mis-connected to you, I was being connected to the human resources department. They would then reconnect me to the actual human resources department (who’s #’s weren’t ever listed) and I would tell the receptionist I was returning a call from the head of the department... Eventually Dreamworks (Universal music) hired me (for free) to come work in their Nashville publishing department.”

Nearly ten years later, after landing that summer internship, Tedder is just wrapping up an international tour with OneRepublic in support of their sophomore release, Waking Up.

Taylor Swift Blogs On Off Days

Hey!!

I know that I use the word "excited" in my blogs more than any other word in the English language, but I have to say... I'm really excited right now. It's really hitting me that I get to go on my first headlining tour. With a big stage. And I'm not opening up for people anymore. And I get to pick what we eat in catering! (I recommended an all cupcake menu, but apparently that doesn't meet everyone's dietary needs for survival. The idea was vetoed. You can't win them all I guess). I get to pick out how the backstage area is decorated. And I love decorations. And backstage areas. There are so many different decisions to be made regarding video content and lighting and changes. So basically....I'm excited.

There are a bunch of new people you're going to see with us this year on that stage. First of all, we have six new dancers who can point their toes and twirl and stuff with the best of them. On the band side, we've added another backup singer and her name is Liz. And she's precious and amazing. You might have seen her perform with us on Leno. That was her first TV gig with us. Another change I wanted to give you guys the heads up on: Unfortunately, you won't see Ben playing banjo with us anymore. :( We're gonna miss him so much, but he's got dreams and wanted to pursue them. We're all so close to him, we'll never stop seeing him around. All the best. :) But there's good news... We've got the insanely talented Mike Meadows playing banjo/mandolin/guitar/keys/cello now (told you he was ridiculous. Count that list of instruments. For those of you who would rather not do unnecessary math on a weekend, that's five instruments.) Mike is hilarious and fits right in with us. He and Liz are part of the family now and I can't wait for you to see what they can do. They've joined "The Agency" (my band has referred to themselves as The Agency since they got to dress up in suits and sunglasses and ransack a house in the Picture to Burn video. The scene of them walking across the yard in slow motion only encouraged this.) So now it's Grant, Paul, Amos, Al, Caitlin, Liz, and Mike. I love it.

Ok...... The ACM's were last week. WOW. What a night! I can't believe I got to accept 2 awards, and winning Album of the Year absolutely blew me away. I won two awards because I was the artist and the co-producer on Fearless. I write songs in my bedroom, and have so much fun doing this, it doesn't really feel like work. The fact that you can win Album of the Year for that was just unbelievable to me. And after I performed, Reba surprised me by giving me the Crystal Milestone award for selling more records than anyone else this year. I can't thank you guys enough for making the album the success story that it has been this year. That's all you. Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU.

We may or may not be shooting the video for "You Belong With Me" this week, and I may or may not be really excited about it. There's that word again. I need to get a thesaurus. I'm... thrilled and ecstatic about shooting this video. Can't wait for you to see it!

Hmmm... other updates..I've worn a dress every day for the past three weeks, and I'm definitely sure now that I'm just better off in dresses. I'll be rehearsing tomorrow and every day until we play our first show. I hope you had a great holiday!

It’s a new year…so as my dear friend Miss
Woods says, ‘let’s find something new to talk about!’ My theme this year; let
go of the past, and focus on all of the beautiful things that are about to fill
our future! I know most of you find that relevant to me in relation to my
departure from dear ol’ DK. I’ve stayed away from directly responding or
commenting on the negativity, or misguided views and judgments that have unfortunately
been the voice of summarizing Danity Kane. But, since I’ve launched a new
myspace, and have a new theme of the year… its only fair to finally put my
thoughts of DK to rest. ....

For those of you who care, Danity Kane was
a beautiful experience, filled with all of life’s wonderful ups and downs, and
I will forever be blessed to have had that experience with none other than
Drea, Dawn, Shan, and D. Each one of those girls is a talent to be
reckoned with… and beyond pure talent which I hands down experienced on a daily
basis from each girl, each girl really did want to be a role model and change
the world in their own little way… and that’s what made us real, what made us
the truth, what made us something to believe in, and that inner desire on all
of our parts has not changed… you may be seeing expression of emotions
succeeding expression of actual reality, but that does not change the reality
that every girl in this group had a dream, and we fought long and hard to see it
become reality. There is no rulebook to life, and how to handle your
dreams once you get them. We are NOT a sad story of loose, betrayal, and
something to teach you what not to do next time… we are a story of courage,
determination, fearlessness, and at the end of the day, real emotion. We
made not have given the world the answer to how to make different types of
women unite as one for eternity… but we wanted to try and that’s more than most
do! ....

That all said, lets support the future of
us all, and forgive the negativity and lost emotions. Life is to be
enjoyed and cherished, and experience is something we should all be thankful
for, not look at in regret. We all have lost jobs, suffered bad
relationships, felt suffocated, unappreciated, sick of giving in, and
determined to take a stand whether anyone is behind us or not… SO really, like
we always said… we were never any different than anyone else… and we loved
that! ....

On travel: As usual, instead of souvenirs I brought home so many wonderful new thoughts, having enjoyed enlightened activities of real peace. Religion often forces us to find one god whereas being spiritual simply means to feel the unbelievable power in all things. Such as, I believe in the undeniable power of you. Truly.

Our minds can play mean tricks on us, so it is important not to identify with any of that potential & hazardous thought up there. Evil thoughts such as, “I’m not good enough,” “I’m too tired or high strung for that” Or worse, “I’m ugly” can create ourselves as exactly those thoughts. Instead, embrace that you at this very moment are perfect. Affirm to your Self, “I am f—ing Awesome!” The culmination of billions of years of evolution has created this moment with you in it — and quite a lucky star you are to experience all this.

Did you ever stop to think that the Universe decided to have a (insert your name) experience? It isn’t the other way around. You, whoever you think you are, can’t heal your bones. You don’t make your heart beat. You don’t have to sit and think about making your food digest. If you have a child, you aren’t the one inside it making it tick and commanding it to grow. The Universe is at work in so many wonderful ways, and it doesn’t stop just because we begin to think we know everything in the adult system. Hell, everything we know is just a story that we’ve made up to help us organize this reality anyway. And since it’s only a story — feel free to change it at any time.

I know my job wouldn’t exist without listeners and readers, those who share my joy and my journeys thru the time and space. I would still have my art, but the vibrations wouldn’t be as strong without the audiences that gather and the collective souls who sing from their cars and within their showers. You make the art more immediate by accepting it, applying it, and continuing to share it on your own plain.

Recently I was turned onto the work of the 13 indigenous Grandmothers; An action team of women from the four corners of the globe who have formed an alliance to bring balance to Mother Earth and all her inhabitants for the next seven generations to come. To do work intended for seven generations is a remarkably selfless act indeed. Imagine making something that you know is meant for someone 200 years from now. It’s like planting a tree. In your lifetime you may not be able to swing from it’s branches, but long after you’re gone, many families will.

The same thought can be applied to consciousness. Are you choosing to think it’s too late to save the planet because you’re not seeing immediate results? Are you personally choosing not to change your diet and bad habits because you think it will make this week suck? Well, think of that distant you in the future who will look back and hug you for the powerful shift in consciousness you decided to make right now.

For the planet and its inhabitants who are still evolving, we may not SEE a world of enlightened beings who coexist with nature, but we can certainly SEED it.

Taylor Swift on the set in L.A. of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with star George Eads.

The 19-year-old Fearless female just returned home from filming her guest spot on the popular CBS drama and found something wonderful waiting for her.
She writes, “While I was in LA, my mom re-arranged my bathroom. As you can imagine, my bathroom looks different now. When I left for LA, my way of storing all of my make up and hair products was to pile it all on my bathroom counter. Most of it was grouped together in a very organized system (the pile). That’s not to say the system was not flawed. There was one tiny, insignificant recurring problem.. If you pulled one thing out of the middle of the pile, it would create a giant avalanche of lip gloss and eye shadow and other various cosmetics (sometimes a container of powder, which was undoubtedly left halfway closed– SO much fun to clean up!). I was fine with my system. 17% of the time, it worked perfectly without disastrous results. I wasn’t going to complain about it because whining isn’t really my thing, and I didn’t have time to create another system (this takes planning and brainstorming!). So my bathroom has stayed the same terrible mess of piled up beauty products for two years.. while I traveled the world with the sad, unorganized state of my bathroom perpetually weighing in the the back of my conscience. Then suddenly… EVERYTHING changed. I came back from LA and discovered a whole new world.”“My bathroom is now a magical, wondrous place with cabinets for storing make up and hooks on the door for holding scarves. There are even drawers for my hair brushes and incredible little shelves for my towels! There’s a new shower curtain in place of the one I’ve had since 7th grade (the one that has always secretly creeped me out a little, because it’s all these people standing around and it really looks like they’re watching me. Which was weird. I never liked them, and I’m glad they’re gone.) There are little windows in one of the dressers, and through it, I can see the candles I used to have stashed randomly on the counter. Now they have their perfect little home, all gathered together in their tiny, organized sanctuary.

“But then I turned around and was startled by something… Where was my Britney Spears poster…. No, this can’t be right… WHERE is it?!? I searched the room frantically for a few seconds before finding it’s new spot. My Britney Spears poster (from 6th grade) had been relocated to my bedroom, which is another AMAZING upgrade. This way, I see it more often and it more proudly displays my unwavering devotion to Britney Spears. My jewelry has been neatly placed into these little jewelry containers that separate your necklaces so they don’t get tangled into a huge unrecognizable, mangled ball that is IMPOSSIBLE to untangle. That used to happen to me all the time, but NOW it’s preventable!

“Also, I found so many things that went missing over the years.. The most notable find would have to be my glasses. I couldn’t believe it, but there they were! Apparently they had been lost somewhere in the giant pile of cosmetic doom.. I eventually gave up the search after a few weeks. Now they’re back! The moral of the story is… My mom is wonderful and we apparently share the same hobby: Compulsively organizing and straightening up around the house whenever we’re bored.

“I can’t wait to tell you all about LA and my life-changing guest appearance on CSI. Basically… When I’m really old and can only remember one story about my life to go back and relive, and tell over and over and over again to the point where my grandchildren roll their eyes and leave the room…… That’s the story. Ah, I can see it now. ‘You know, when I was a youngster, I got to guest star on CSI! It was marvelous! So marvelous, it was!’ It was that good. I’ll tell you all about the rest. 4 DAYS!!!!

i’m headed to london today for some album promo and i’m so freakin’ excited!! i’m ready for y’all to hear this album! i’m so proud of it!! i think it’s 4 more days and my first single drops at radio and i’m super super pumped!! we decided the cover of the album and just in case you haven’t seen it i’ll post it! it’s very colorful and they have definitely photo-shopped the crap out of me but i don’t care haha! whoever she is, she looks great ha! i’ve had so much fun with this album i really hope y’all dig it woohooooooooooo!!!!

and by the way, i’m now on ‘eclipse’ of the twilight series and so is my mom, my sister and all of my friends …..you could say we’re a bit addicted and all searching for our very own personal ‘edward’ …..and yes, in the most pathetic way possible ha 

ooh!! and the soundtrack to the movie ‘twilight’ is awesome! i can’t stop listening to ‘flightless bird, american mouth’! the production is breathtaking!

“Normally I don’t feel like I NEED to make a statement like this, but after I read some recently reported untruths I feel like I have to. I want to take a second to address the hurtful posts and clear up any misunderstandings any of you may have about my law suit. I would NEVER sue the deceased pilots’ estates or personal holdings. I am more than grateful that I survived this horrible accident and I’d never try to take anything from those that didn’t. Despite the misinterpretations of the lawsuit, this suit is against the insurance companies that insured the pilots. I’m not after Sarah [Lemmon]’s or James [Bland]‘ personal estates nor their property. Everyone involved in this suit has suffered a great deal, and I would not do anything to make matters worse for the deceased family and friends. Daily I live with the guilt and grief of what happened that night, what I saw, who was lost and why I was spared. I have no words to express the pain that comes with knowing four people died, while I lived.”

Hey everybody
I am writing this on Christmas eve.
After Me and my mom tried out the chocolate fondue set she got from her work. Ofcourse it was a total disaster but in the end we managed to get some decent chocolate sauce without burning the house down LOL. I do feel sick a little bit hahah. Never ate so much chocolate at once. But its guess that's okey since its Christmas. I am so happy to be back home to celebrate with my family.

This year has been great and I couldn't have done all of this without your support!

"Hey everybody, I got back home to the Netherlands just in time because one of my all-time favorite singers was here to perform! I have always wanted to see one of his shows ever since I was little. My dad is a music freak just like me and when I grew up it really inspired me to likeall different types of music. But he had one record that I always begged him to play, which was "Songs in the Key of Life" by Stevie Wonder. I loved his soulful voice and the music blew me away. So when I heard that he was here to perform I just had to go. The guy is a legend and I wasn't gonna miss out on it. So I went to his show and I was so excited - it was an amazing show! He had the biggest live band I have ever seen with the best musicians on the planet and he even brought his daughter out to sing. He had so much energy his vocals were amazing. But what I really loved about him was that he was such a cool person. He kept making jokes and he seemed so relaxed. You could see that he was just loving every second of being up there. But what was even more amazing is that I got to go backstage and meet him. I was so happy and excited I couldn't believe it was happening to me! Here he was just sitting behind a keyboard. I got all nervous (LOL) so I shook his hand and told him how much I admired him. He was so nice. I told him I was a singer and asked him for advice he said: "dontcha ever stop doing what you do." I got to take a picture with him and I couldn't stop smiling all the way home."

Lily Allen posted a new blog on her myspace Monday:
"My new album will be released on the 9th of Feb 2009. I know it's a while away, but there will be bits and bobs flying around before then, I'm shooting a video (for viral release) in the next couple of weeks, to keep you entertained. I am so excited, were getting all the artwork and stuff done and coming up with new and interesting ideas. I am trying really hard to do this album with integrity and I want you all to know that it has been thought about by me, not just some thrown together last minute industry bullshizz. I hope you'll all love it as much as I do, I'm working on extra stuff in the studio at the moment, it seems making an album isn't enough these days, some websites (not naming any!) won't put an album on their front page unless you give them exclusive tracks, not that I'm complaining, I am at my happiest in the studio so it works well for me, I just don't want to put out sub standard stuff. I always thought an album was a body of work in itself. You take it or leave it. You wouldn't say to a painter "Yeah I love the naked ladies, but would you mind painting their hair blonde instead of brown, and making their tits a bit bigger?" or "the trees are really pretty, a few more leaves perhaps?" Maybe you would actually, ha ha.
Anyway whatevs."

My size 0 jeans...by Ashlee Simpson-Wentz
Today I read on a blog that I went to the doctor and he said I was overweight and I cried and went to Planet Blue (because I was blue) and bought 6 pair of size 0 jeans. Now it is ridiculous to read such nonsense about oneself so I thought I was would address this one...1. My doctor says I am right on target with my weight gain2. Have not been to Planet Blue in at least two years3. Love my maternity jeans ..they have stretchy tops it is awesome!4. My closet full of size 0 are being worn by Pete right now and he looks hot in them :)So now that I have cleared that up let me tell you...carrying a child is the most inspiring, emotional, amazing experience of my life. My weight and my pant size are the absolute last thing I am concerned about. I am only concerned with having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. People who talk and judge pregnant women's weight need to get a life!!!

Where Has JoJo Been?

Singer JoJo has been laying low as she works on her new album. She decided to write a quick..(rather long) blog on her myspace giving an update.

"Just wanted to check in and write to you a little bit... I hope everyone is having a great summer and makig the most of it! My Lifetime movie "True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet" comes on tomarrow (Saturday) at 9 pm EST so be sure to check it out! Right now I'm in Atlanta, Georgia right now putting the finishing touches on my album. I am so happy with how its turning out, and so thrilled to have been able to work with the producers and collaborators that I have. Ive never felt more enthusiastic about a project, and I feel like this speaks to where I am in my life as well as lyrically and musically. Its been such an enjoyable process to assemble this record, and I am anxious for you to hear it and see what you think. :)
But i've got to be a little vulnerable for a minute.... im a bit frustrated! I'm 17 years old, and I feel that people have tried to dismiss me in the industry or have the sense of "Why hasnt she been doing anything? She must be dead". This is pretty sucky! When people havent heard music from you in quite some time, its understandable that they may want to dismiss you as being "done", and its hard because folks dont get to see what goes on behind the scenes for months, sometimes years to put things together, etc. Im about to be a senior in high school, im dedicated to my education as well as my career so it gets difficult to juggle sometimes, but i feel that anything thats worth it takes work. Bottom line, just because Im not in the spotlight does not mean that ive retired (lol). Im so young, and music is my everything. I view my career as a marathon, not a sprint. And i try to do things based on the long term plan, not for financially motivated reasons. Have I made mistakes? Absolutely. Will I make more? Sure! But will I learn along the way, channel it into my music, chalk it up to experience, and come out stronger from it? You betta believe it ;)!
I just want to thank you for sticking by me, waiting it out with me, and growing up with me. Its amazing that I put my first single out when I was 13 and now im just finishing up my third album and Im not even 18 yet! Ive seen so much in a short span of time, and learned to much. Its a blessing, and I promise to not forget it. I vow to put my all into everything that I do and to always represent what I believe in to the fullest. I cant wait for you to read/hear the lyrics to the title track "All I Want is Everything" because it really represents how I feel at this point in my life. I wrote it out of hope, excitement, frustration, and based on my dreams. I think everyone will be able to relate to the feeling. :) Im anxious for you to see and hear what Ive been working on.
